It is an homage of sorts to my all-time favorite novel, "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein. But this is not a cheap knockoff. "Steel Beach" stands in its own right, and John Varley does honor Heinlein/5(73).
Steel Beach is a sci-fi novel that explores the question of how humankind might evolve if, like a fish, it was cast up upon a beach, gasping for air. The beach in question is a human-made environment in space (on the moon, specifically) with no ability to return to the ocean that is earth.4/5.

Steel Beach. John Varley's Steel Beach is a daring, well-conceived work of science fiction. Humanity has been ejected from Earth by enigmatic aliens trying to save cetaceans. Homo sapiens finds itself exiled to strongholds throughout the solar system, foremost of which is Luna.
There, human beings live in great comfort with almost all of their needs met and very little to. One of the finest and most endearing books in this sequence is the ‘Steel Beach’ ().
In part a musing upon the meaning of life, in part a murder-mystery, with plenty of gallows humour and wry wit, Varley delights in several classic cinematic references. "Steel Beach" was my first introduction into Varley's "Eight Worlds" universe (although he claims that this book technically does not belong in that series because of several timeline inconsistencies, come on, we all know it for what it is).5/5(5).
